Arqueólogo e historiador del arte alemán. Hijo de un zapatero remendón, estudió teología y medicina antes de descubrir el arte griego. Su ensayo titulado
Gedanken über die Nachahmung der griechischen Werke in der Malerei und Bildhauerkunst [Reflexiones sobre la imitación de las obras griegas en la pintura y la escultura] (1755) se convirtió en el manifiesto del ideal griego en la educación y el arte, y al poco tiempo fue traducido a varios idiomas. Luego de convertirse al catolicismo romano, se trasladó a Roma (1755) y ejerció importantes puestos en el Vaticano. Ahí escribió la
Historia del arte de la antigüedad (1764), que inauguró el estudio de la historia del arte como disciplina y de la arqueología como ciencia humanista. Sus escritos volvieron a despertar el gusto popular por el arte clásico y fueron decisivos en la generación del movimiento neoclásico (
